Ozone Therapy

Ozone dental therapy is a holistic treatment that significantly reduces the presence of oral bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. This is a minimally invasive alternative that wards off the advance of developing tooth decay, reduces inflammation, treats periodontal disease (Gum disease), dental abscesses and teeth sensitivity.

What is Ozone?

Ozone, or trioxygen , is an ideal disinfectant for air, water and surfaces. It kills single and multicellular organisms with low cell specialization, i.e. bacteria, viruses (including COVID-19), parasites, or fungi. The ozone attaches itself to the wall of a diseased cell or a virus which does not have a chemical that can eliminate the ozone, so the ozone kills the virus.

What is Dental Ozone?

Dental ozone gas and oil can be applied to teeth, gums, or within an extracted tooth site. When applied to teeth or gums, dental ozone destroys bacteria while strengthening the tooth structure using a remineralization process. At the time of a tooth extraction, dental ozone can be used to destroy bacteria within the bone and abscess tissue area. The ozone attaches itself to the wall of a diseased cell or a virus which does not have a chemical that can eliminate the ozone, so the ozone kills the virus. The benefit to dental ozone treatment during a tooth extraction is to improve the healing from dead bone, reduce the effects of abscessed tissue and improve the healing outcome while reducing post procedure pain. Dental ozone can also be used with dental bone grafting to destroy bacteria before the bone graft cells turn over thus improving the success rate. The device we have is an ozone generator. We feed pure oxygen (O2) through a tube. There are 2 other tubes of the ozone generator that generate an electrical molecule charge and as the oxygen passes through, it then becomes ozone (O3).

Dental Ozone at Emerald Coast Dental Spa:

Ozone has many applications in our dental office.

We use it for non-surgical gum treatments and any kind of gum infections are treated with ozone as well. It is our standard protocol for treating gum disease. Dental ozone has been shown in research papers to dramatically reduce inactivate microorganisms causing periodontal disease, working to reduce both the bleeding index and plaque index.

We have many patients that come in with root canals and are concerned about their health following the root canal treatment. We can offer ozone treatment around the tooth to kill all of the existing bacteria, fungus, virus, and parasites that can hide around the root of the tooth following an infection.

Benefits of Dental Ozone:

Dental ozone can be used during a tooth extraction as well. The benefit to dental ozone during a tooth extraction is that the diseased bone and tissue cells are cleaned and the
cell walls of the diseased cells are destroyed. The dental ozone gas or oil can be infused into all the small bone porosities and gum pockets under the gum line. This means that healing time and post-op pain can be improved.

Dental ozone can also be used to treat mouth painful ulcers or herpes virus lesions. Ozone is used as a mouth rinses and is also in our water unit lines.

Because of its efficiency and lack of side effects, ozone water can be used for purification purposes. Ozone water lines improve our patients’ safety experience by decreasing contamination of microorganisms and can reduce biofilm up to 57%. A preprocedural ozone water rinse a for 30 seconds and then swallowing, helps to improve the safety of the dental team and overall air quality.

Ozone therapy has been utilized and heavily researched for more than a century. Its effects are proven, consistent, and safe with minimal and preventable side effects in
dentistry. Dental ozone can be very safe and beneficial if used in the proper concentration and application.
